Udari Jayasiri, Classical Indian Vocalist

Udari Jayasiri is an Indian classical music vocalist. She is originally from Sri Lanka. She came to the United States five years ago with her husband. Udari studied Indian classical music (vocal and violin) for seven years at Bhatkhande University Lucknow, India, where she completed a Master’s degree equivalent. She was a dedicated member and a performer of SPICMACAY at the University of Virginia for two years.
Udari is a member of The Chancel Adult Choir. Her upcoming program, “Music of India,” will highlight Indian Classical Music as one of the oldest music forms of the world. A combination of notes called a “Raag,” is the soul of Indian classical music. You will get to hear one of the most beautiful Raags, called “Puriya Dhanashri” and couple of movie songs influenced by this Raag.
Udari will compare similarities and major differences between Western music and Indian music. She will conclude with a brief introduction to Semi Classical music and Indian film music, and will perform a few songs as examples.
This free concert, offered through the Newsong Concert Series, will take place on Sunday, February 12, at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow.
