First UMC Oak Ridge offers many opportunities for service, but we believe that worship is the most important event of each week.  We worship in two distinct styles, and each is meaningful and moving in its own way.

Traditional Worship
Sundays 8:45am and 11:00am, Sanctuary

In traditional worship you can expect to hear organ or piano music, to sing hymns, and to be led by the youth choir at 8:45 or the chancel choir at 11:00.  Pastors wear robes and children help to acolyte (bring in the Light of Christ) and be crucifer (carry the cross in during the processional hymn) .

This service offers communion on the first Sunday of each month.  You do not need to be a member of the church to receive communion.

Child care is provided free of charge for children in kindergarten and younger on the lower floor of the church.

Contemporary Worship
Sundays 11:00am, Multipurpose Room

Here you can expect to hear a live band with guitars, drums, and vocalists leading the congregation in  music - whose lyrics appear on large screens.  Occasionally a song that you had not considered to be "worship" music will be heard - meaningful music can be found in many places. We also use videos to help illustrate the pastor's message and there are some occasions when we pray using written liturgy (words read aloud).

This service offers communion on the first Sunday of each month. You do not need to be a member of the church to receive communion.

Many families attend this service - and children can often be found dancing along to the music in the aisles.  Children's Church is offered for children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade each week, except on Communion Sunday, during the 11:00am Contemporary Worship Service. Parents may register their children to attend as they enter the Multipurpose Room.  Children are dismissed from the worship service at a set point to go to Room 304 for a separate learning time. This is completely optional and families are always free to have their children remain in the Multipurpose Room with them for the entire worship services.  Materials for children to use during worship are available by asking an usher.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get there?  We are located at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge TN 37830.
  • Where should I park?  If you are able, we invite you to park in the lot across from the church on Tulane Avenue and walk over.  This is officially the parking lot for Oak Ridge's Chamber of Commerce, who graciously allows us to use it each week.  If you need to park closer, or come during the week, we invite you to park in either of our church parking lots, both accessible from Tulane Avenue.  The lower lot is visible from Oak Ridge Turnpike and accesses the main office and lower floor, including Keystone Adult Day Program and First Steps Child Development Center.  The upper lot is near Vienna Road, and provides a "drive through" under our covered walkway.  Most of this lot is designated as handicapped, and accesses the main floor including both worship spaces.
  • What should I wear?  We encourage people to wear their best for God.  This means whatever your best is, be that suit and tie or jeans and a clean shirt.  Here you will find both of these outfits regularly.  What matters is that you are here - not what you wear.
  • Will I be singled out as a visitor?  We would love to greet you, know who you are and what brought you to church that day - but we will not ask you to stand up and be recognized as a visitor in worship.  Please let us know you were here by filling out the attendance pads in the pews. We won't bombard you with stuff-we just want to let you know we were glad to have you with us! Come by the "Donut Hole" in the Vienna Road Welcome Center for some coffee, a doughnut, and you can find what Sunday School class would be best for you!
  • What about my children?  Children are an important part of every worship service at First UMC and are welcome to stay throughout.    We encourage parents of older children to sit where their children can see well, as their interest and attention will improve if they can see properly.  Children's Church is also offered every Sunday (except Communion Sunday)  during the 11:00 Traditional and Contemporary Services.  This is a time for continued learningfor children in grades Kindergarten thru 3rd Grade. We also provide books, magazines, coloring pages, and children's bulletins near the entrances to help children who stay in the worship services make it through the sermon-time.  We realize, however, that parents sometimes need alternative options for younger children (for the child's sake or for the parent's sake) and provide free, safe childcare for children ages 6 weeks through kindergarten.
