There is a lovely hymn we sing entitled, “We are Called.” The refrain says, “We are called to act with justice. We are called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.” Since 2003, our church has sent over 30 mission teams to Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, and now Panama, where extreme poverty exists and clean water, healthcare, and a good education are not available to most. We diagnose several new cases of diabetes & hypertension each year and provide much needed medicines to those afflicted. Our vision team provides glasses to hundreds, in addition to screening for glaucoma. We refer these patients to specialty care and pay for transportation and hospital fees.
Our construction teams have built and repaired churches and small homes, and we give out toothbrushes and toothpaste. More recently, we purchased sewing machines and taught those interested to sew so they could generate income for their churches. They have used this money to paint a local house, paint their church, and buy supplies for their dance team’s costumes.
Not everyone can go on a mission trip, but everyone can serve by making a donation which will allow us to buy eyeglasses, medical and dental supplies, sewing material, construction supplies, water buckets and more. As in the last verse of “We are Called,” we can join together and “Sing of that great day when all will be one! God will reign and we'll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love” Make your check out to FUMC and indicate “Adult Mission Trip Fund” on the memo line.
