welcome to first church

Welcome to First Church! We would love for you to join us as guests and friends. For more information on how to find us, see the map below and watch the virtual tour. Scroll down to learn about our worship services.

who are we?

We're a group of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Ever since we began as a collection of displaced Methodists in the secret city of Oak Ridge, we have hoped to make an impact. Our goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. That's something we take seriously. We work to help those who  need help- in our community and in the world. Over the years we have worked to foster new initiatives in the Oak Ridge community like the annual Earth Day Festival, the Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic, the Trinity Outreach Center., and our Free Community Meals.

We embrace Jesus’ message that God loves and accepts every person. Therefore, we welcome all to share in the life and ministry of this community of faith. Our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, economic condition, physical ability or mental ability.

where are we?

what you should expect on sundays

We believe that people can encounter the Living God in a wide variety of worship settings and styles, which acknowledges the unique human beings that God created us to be.

traditional worship

sundays 8:45am and 11:00am, nave

In traditional worship you can expect to hear organ music, to sing hymns, and to be led by the youth choir at 8:45 or the chancel choir at 11:00.  Pastors wear robes and are acolytes (bring in the Light of Christ) and a crucifer (carry the processional cross).

contemporary worship
sundays 11:00am, multi-purpose room

Our Contemporary Service, held in the Multipurpose Room, is a nontraditional worship experience incorporating modern worship music led by a live band of guitars, drums, keyboard, and vocals as well as preaching that digs deep into Scripture and its relevance for our daily lives. The atmosphere is casual and inviting—with adults dressed in a little bit of everything, kids dancing in the aisles, videos on the screens, and cups of coffee in hands throughout the room!

Both services offer Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month. You do not need to be a member of the church or a United Methodist to receive Communion. It is the Lord’s Supper, not ours, and it is Christ who invites you. As our ritual puts it: “Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.” We do not refuse any who present themselves desiring to receive. Whether you should receive Communion with us is between you and God.
